This jacket is a stunning example of a "coat of many colors," utilizing the Trip Around the World (also known as Sunshine and Shadows) quilt pattern.

The Quilt Pattern

  • The "Trip" Layout: This design is characterized by a central square surrounded by concentric rings of contrasting colored squares that "radiate" outward. On the jacket, the squares are set on point (tilted as diamonds), which creates a sophisticated, diagonal flow that naturally follows the lines of the garment.

  • Postage Stamp Scale: The squares used here are very small—often referred to as "postage stamp" size. Piecing a quilt with hundreds of tiny $1$ to $1.5$-inch squares requires immense patience and precision, as even a slight misalignment in the seam allowance will throw off the entire grid.

Design & Modification

  • Material Mixing: You’ve combined the vintage quilt with a heavy denim collar and repurposed Carhartt pockets. This mix of delicate, hand-pieced cotton with rugged, utilitarian denim creates a "Modern Americana" aesthetic that is both functional and artistic.

  • Visual Movement: The "stepping" effect of the colors—moving from reds and pinks to greens and blues—is a hallmark of this pattern. By centering a specific color run on the sleeve or front panel, the jacket gains a structured, intentional look that doesn't feel cluttered despite the high piece count.

Construction & Texture

  • Hand-Quilted Detail: The dense, cross-hatch quilting is visible across the entire surface. This texture is vital for upcycled clothing because it provides the "loft" and stiffness needed for the jacket to hold its shape, rather than draping like a thin shirt.

  • The "Crinkle" Factor: The high density of the seams and the natural aging of the cotton give the jacket that classic "vintage crinkle," which feels incredibly soft and lived-in.

Note - created with a vintage quilt, which was character and variation.
