This jacket was crafted using a classic Nine Patch block variation, specifically set "on point" (rotated 45 degrees). This particular arrangement is often referred to as a Nine Patch with Alternating Solids.

Block Structure & Design

  • The Nine Patch: The central motif consists of nine small squares joined in a 3 x 3 grid. You can see the blue-and-white polka dot squares alternating with cream-colored squares to create that recognizable checkerboard look.

  • On-Point Setting: By rotating the blocks into a diamond orientation, the design gains a more dynamic, rhythmic feel that flows well across the garment's silhouette.

  • The "Setting Squares": The large, solid pink diamonds surrounding the nine-patch units are called "setting squares." These provide a visual resting place for the eye and make the patterned blocks "pop."

Textile & Construction Details

  • Fabric Era: The blue-and-white polka dot and the saturated pink suggest a mid-century or Depression-era aesthetic, which was famous for utilizing "penny" prints and high-contrast color pairings.

  • Quilting Pattern: The jacket features dense diagonal grid quilting. This not only secures the layers but also provides the structural "body" necessary for a functional piece of outerwear, giving it that beautiful crinkled texture.

  • Binding: The edges appear to be finished with a contrasting multi-colored floral or paisley binding, which adds a modern, "coat of many colors" flair to the traditional geometric pattern.

Style & Fit

The jacket is cut in a kimono or chore-coat style with wide sleeves, which is an excellent choice for this block type. It allows the large pink diamonds to remain intact across the back and shoulders, showcasing the original quilt’s geometry perfectly.

It’s a fantastic example of "upcycling" where the structural integrity of the hand-stitched quilt is given a second life as a wearable piece of art.

Note, all quilt jackets are made with vintage quilts.
